NOTE TO SELF:
RESPECT & NOT TAKING IT PERSONALLY
Around a year ago, I was sat with my friend after work having a chat about someone who was causing him problems, when suddenly, for some reason, I had a light bulb moment:
"Do you respect her behaviour?"
His answer was a no, and so I went on to ask:
"So why are you validating her behaviour?"
By 'validating', I mean considering the behaviour as if it has any merit, or has any bearing upon your character. In all honesty, the above conversation was my moment of awakening too when it came to dealing with mean people.
It can be difficult not to feel incredulous when someone treats your in a way that doesn't align with decent morals. It can be confusing, hurtful and annoying, and these thoughts can become consuming. If you don't attach significance or value to disrespectful and mean behaviour, and remember that it has no bearing upon your character, those feelings should subside.
By viewing their actions as a reflection of issues within their character rather than yours, it becomes easier to handle people who treat you badly. By removing the feeling of a personal attack, you can remain as your true self.
