MY FAVOURITE LIPSTICK FORMULAS
Lipsticks…I’ve found that either you love them or you’re definitely not their biggest fan. For me, I don’t like heavy lipsticks or a formula that accentuates lines, texture or dryness, which, unfortunately, the majority of lipsticks have a tendency to do on me. However, I’m a makeup lover and I wasn’t having it be that I didn’t think any lip product on the market was suitable for my needs, so I began to research and hunt. YouTube and blogs are an incredible way of finding out the really good stuff – particularly if you find people who have a say-it-as-it-is attitude – as you’re getting the nitty-gritty from people who are makeup lovers and/or have tried a wide range of products and know the good from the not-so. As a result, I’ve managed to build up a collection of lip products which all have beautiful formulas, each one suitable for different occasions, as well as a range of colours that I can rely on to compliment any look I’ve done perfectly.
I’ve decided to do this post specifically about my favourite formulas rather than colours because my ‘perfect nude’ or ‘perfect red’ will be different to somebody else's. Everybody has different preferences colour-wise, so I decided by sharing my favourite formulas, this post will help guide you in the right direction, so you know you’re in safe hands before you choose the colour that you love.
I have never tried a formula quite like Powder Kiss by MAC. They’re incredible! They have a matte-satin powder finish which feels so comfortable and cushioning. It is by far my favourite MAC lip formula. Some of the colours I love are Mull It Over, which is a peachy-pink nude, and Shocking Revelation, which is a true blue red – have a look at my blog post, Getting Into The Festive Spirit, from a few weeks ago and see this beautiful red shade for yourself and the eye look I’ve paired it with for some inspiration.
Equally as comfortable and cushioning as MAC’s Powder Kiss formula, Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution formula is completely different yet just as stunning. Instead of a powder finish, the Matte Revolution lipsticks have an ever so slight sheen, without looking remotely glossy or creamy, which gives your lips a natural texture, look and feel while making it exceptionally easy to apply and lightweight to wear. My favourite shades are the iconic shade Pillow Talk, which is a your-lips-but-better pink nude, Very Victoria which is a deep rosy nude with a brown undertone (view The Perfect Winter Glam to see) and Super Cindy which is gorgeous peach nude.
The Velvet Lip Glide by Nars is my absolute favourite lip product on a day-to-day basis, and I’m saying that as somebody who doesn’t particularly like to wear lipstick day-in and day-out. Even though the formula isn’t long-wearing and requires regular top-ups throughout the day, I am addicted to its glossy, yet non-sticky feel. What’s more, the Velvet Lip Glide doesn’t negatively enhance texture or dryness at all and doesn’t sit weirdly in the creases of my lips (which is my biggest pet peeve with makeup!). The formula is amazingly natural and effortless, and makes your lips look hydrated and fresh. My favourite colour so far is Swing, which is a medium rose nude, but I really want to try Stripped, which is a light beige nude similar to “So Cute” gloss by Kylie Cosmetics, and Xenon, which is a dusty mauve.
The traditional bullet-style matte lipsticks from Kylie Cosmetics are some of my favourite go-to colours. I was astounded at how lovely the formula was, as Kylie is known for loving a matte finish in all aspects of her makeup and I was worried that the lipsticks would be fairly dry. However, even with the matte finish, the formula is thin and lightweight, and is also incredibly pigmented. Prepping your lips with a balm will aid an effortless application and comfortable wear.
The Estée Lauder lipsticks are by far one of the priciest lipsticks on the market, however, their shade Pink Berry, which is a stunning nude-ish pink-mauve, is one of my favourite colours that I’ve ever come across – so-much-so that it lives permanently in my handbag. The cream formula is absolutely stunning – it doesn’t accentuate any lines or texture, it is very comfortable and hydrating, and it is exceptionally easy to apply. If you’re looking to treat yourself to a new lipstick, go and see if you like any of the colours!
The only reason I picked up the Bobbi Brown Crushed Liquid Lip is because I saw Gina Shkeda wearing it in one of her makeup tutorials on Instagram (I’m literally her biggest fan haha) and when I went into my local makeup store I decided to check them out myself. From swatching lots of different products, I know the difference between the formulas I know I’ll like and what I won’t, and I was hooked on (yet again) another product having a cream-gloss look but without that sticky texture. What’s super annoying though is that the Crushed Liquid Lips contain raspberry extract and I’m sensitive to raspberries, so I can feel my lips slightly tingling when I wear this! So, even though I (obviously) don’t wear this often, I definitely can recommend the formula. They just make your lips look so healthy.
When I’m wanting to wear a lipstick that will last a long time, I immediately reach for my liquid lipstick lip kits by Kylie Cosmetics. Kylie’s innovative idea of selling a lipstick and a lip liner that match exactly or compliment each other perfectly is ingenious, and the combination of her exceptionally creamy liners alongside a thin coating of her richly pigmented liquid lipsticks on top is a recipe for the perfect long-wearing pout. The key is to line and fill your whole lip (or the majority) with lip liner and put a blob of the liquid lip in the centre and carefully pat it out to create a thin layer across the whole lip. This will provide you with the most comfortable wear and the best look! A lot of YouTubers put tonnes of the liquid lipstick on and then complain about them being dry and thick! A lot of the time with makeup it’s about applying the product in the way the creator has designed them to work in order to achieve the best look. Both her matte and velvet formulas are amazing. Some of my favourite colours are Bare (Velvet), Maliboo (Matte), Candy K (Matte and Velvet) and Posie K (Matte).
Just like her Matte Revolution formula, her cream K.I.S.S.I.N.G one is just as good. Charlotte Tilbury has some of the best products on the market and her lipsticks are fool proof. The K.I.S.S.I.N.G formula has stunning pigmentation and the creaminess makes them exceptionally comfortable to wear. The range of colours are incredible, and the formula is available in her Hot Lips (and Hot Lips 2) range too (as is Matte Revolution) which is a collection where each lipstick is named and inspired by Charlotte’s famous friends, such as Amal Clooney and Kylie Minogue, and is in collaboration with Women for Women International. £1 million pounds of the sales from the Hot Lips range is donated to the charity to aid “their work helping women survivors of war rebuild their lives”, so you’ll be helping an amazing cause by purchasing one of these beauties.
